2008 Church Bylaws

The Invitation & Launch Team

Pastor Gary Hebden, serving as the Northeast District Superintendent of Open Bible Churches, in February of 2000 spoke with Pastor Vaughn Wood about coming to Spokane , Washington to plant a new Open Bible Church. Pastor Vaughn flew to Spokane to pray and explore the opportunity and almost immediately felt spiritually led to the community. Pastor Monte LeLaCheur of First Church of the Open Bible in Spokane , Pastor Gary Hebden of Valley Open Bible in the Spokane Valley , Pastor Chuck Rainwater of Country Open Bible Church in Elk and Pastor Joe Wittwer of Life Center in Spokane , rallied around the potential new plant. Meanwhile, Pastor Vaughn began in February, 2000 to meet with a small group of people at his current pastorate and church that he and Myrtha planted in 1990 in Southern Idaho to train and pray together as a potential church plant team. From this group, a handful of excited and dedicated people decided to take the big step and move with Pastor Vaughn & Myrtha Wood to establish a new church and ministry that would reach the unchurched and overchurched in Spokane.

The Move

Pastor Vaughn moved without his family at first to establish a job and a home in May of 2000. It was while living in a fifth wheel at the Yogi Bear Camp Resort in Geiger Heights and working a new job in the area that the Lord began to speak to his heart about the new church's name, purpose and overall vision. All of this was born out of a month of prayer, fasting and study concerning the Life, Ministry and Message of Jesus Christ- a perfect paradigm and focus for a new congregation. It became clear, Spokane didn't need another church, it needed Jesus!

The Start

By the end of May, 2000, Myrtha and the kids had joined Pastor Vaughn in Spokane along with some of the plant team and a few others from local Open Bible Churches that desired to take part in establishing a new ministry that would walk, talk and minister like Christ. A home group began in Pastor Vaughn & Myrtha's rental home on 4411 E. 46th, this also housed the first official office for New Heights Church. While meeting in this home, several friends and neighbors began accepting the call to follow Christ. Excitement and purpose filled the air. Quickly, New Heights launched a first public worship service in the Grange Hall on the Palouse Highway on Saturday night, June 2nd, 2000, the same date that New Heights was officially Incorporated in the State of Washington.

A Mobile Church

Following a short month in the Grange Hall on Saturday nights, New Heights began meeting in the Budget Inn Conference Room on 4th St. (now Quality Inn). This would be where we would call home for nearly a year. Our very first service we had a young mother run to the front where Pastor Vaughn was preaching and begged out loud with tears flowing down her face for God to heal her very sick little baby in ICU up the street at Sacred Heart Hospital. After praying with this mom, many on the plant team went to Sacred Heart to pray for her child. The child was miraculously healed and mom and dad came to know the Lord Jesus Christ.

There were several more locations that New Heights called home until ending up at our current location at 708 W Nora Street , just one mile north of the downtown Spokane Arena.

Nora Street Story

There is a rich heritage at our current location. Our church facility has housed First Church of the Nazarene, Calvary Chapel of Spokane and then Life Center Foursquare Church. Throughout the course of the past one hundred years the Word of God has been faithfully preached and lived from this special location, where thousands upon thousands of decisions for Christ have been made. We were given the great opportunity to move and grow into ownership of the entire city block that includes five buildings on the campus, one of which houses a six hundred seat auditorium.

A Growing Church

We have a desire to be a multi-campus ministry that extends its arms to the north, south, east and west side neighborhoods of Spokane. Families from all over the Inland Northwest currently call New Heights their church home. We have a passion to continue teaching the uncompromised Word of God. We offer a 10am service. New Heights is a church that was established by families for families, with a focus on growing the individual person into the likeness of Christ. Our vision is to help make your vision a reality, as you come to understand God's will and Divine purpose for your life.
